I have often mentioned I have many ram rods. Originally, I acquired them for several rifles and to assist others on the range with problems. Somewhere along the line it got out of hand. I now go to 12 step meetings for other ram rod obsessed guys. Or should.
Enneyhow, I bought some brass tubing at a close out sale and figured a ram rod from it would be neat. I also had a .54 jag tip that wouldn't fit any of my rods or other fittings. So, the rod, tip and insanity produced this. I went to an antique shop and bought the door knob for a handle. I was looking for brass or bronze but couldn't find any. I had intended to solder the ends in. I bought some past solder and all that came out of the tube was brown gunk, probably flux. Switched to JB Weld and then pinned the tip and handle. I like to make things, partially, to save money. I only have about $30.00 invested in this. :shocked2: Oh, well.

Hey, WOW- you have the coolest ramrod on the range!!

(this was suggested in Dutch Schoultz' monograph, and I've always been meaning to try it, but some other project kept bumping it down the great punchlist of life)

Thanks guys. I really wasn't expecting compliments. I put more work into this than appears and my result may be nothing more than a novelty. But, I'll use it on the range. We are here for fun anyway.

I have lined brass tubing with cheap steel rods to stiffen them..it works!.That rod belongs with a dueling set of flintlocks!

"Pimp my Ramrod" that's rich!!! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Thanks Jack. I needed that. It's been a long day.

Nice work Rifleman. Really sharp.

Next I hope you'll make a rod with a billiard ball, then a rod with a golf club head, then maybe one with a shrunken pygmy head.....

So many rods, so little time. See you at the next meeting!

My steel ramrod is wonderful for shooting at the range but a bit awkward in a hunting situation.
I had too many (2) events where the wooden ramrod split and I drove the very sharp, very hard wood splinter almost all the way through my right hand. (This can prevented by not bending the rod when seating the ball BUT sometimes you forget)

If you bend the steel rod you can easily straighten it out and it requires no bandages

Dutch, that advice should be burned into the brain of every beginning ml shooter. And a lot of the guys who think they have experience.
I'm ramrod safety phobic and rarely use wood anymore except at rendezvous and presentations.
My range rod material is primarily Delrin. I used to make and sell them.

Looks great! FYI, here's a post I had made on making hollow brass ramrods and I used a short 4-6" section of smaller tubing inside the ends to stiffen them. Someone has since reported that commercial ends are sold, but I was just cobbeling together parts I had on hand or readily available at your local hardware store. Cheers!
