I was in the hardware store today and just happened to see ramin dowels. I picked through and found a 3/8 x 36" with no run out. Very bendable and cheap. Might be worth playing with. :hmm:

Don't buy ramrod blanks on the internet. You get what THEY send. I have been a victim of a broken rod with a bad puncture of the hand. I now have to visually inspect my own rods. I bought six 7/16th maple rods for my .54 cals. I taper them for MY guns. Zonies diagramed picture of the runouts is what to lookout for. I went to two lowes and three Home Depots until I found the maple rods. I keep looking for a source of hickory. I took two whole packages of rods, about 180 rods, to one of the customer sites with a chair and desk. There, I started inspecting rods until I found a half dozen that met my standards. I did get asked what I was doing. And after I told them, they let me alone to find my purchase. That was about 15 months ago. I'd prefer the hickory. But, I still have two in use and four backups.

I have never been able to get a Delrin tree to grow in my back yard but you can't break these things

Yuppir!!!! My Renegade wears a black Delrin rod when I'm hunting or playing at the range, the wooden ramrod is just for show. Especially when I am in the woods, I DO NOT want to take the chance on having a broken ramrod! Or a devastating hand injury, far from help!

I used to manufacture and sell Delrin rods. I tossed the scraps in my back yard. Stuff is growing like crazy. I may start harvesting and go back in business.
Seriously, I'm all in on the safety aspect of using a non-breakable rod like steel or Delrin.

How about a 3/8 brass rod? I got tired of breaking wood and bought a brass one and that's what I use with my GPR. I love it. It does add considerable muzzle weight to a rifle but it's practically indestructible. Nothings more irritating than having to leave the range, woods, or a shoot, before you're done on account of a dad jume broken rod.
