Straight or tapered, which do you think is better and why?

It's been my experience thet for small caliburs, the "tapered" tip allows enough "room" for the patch to fold upon withdrawal of the ramrod.

"clean'n jags" thet are of much larger dia. then the ramrod, don't benifit from such a tapered tip.

I'm confused with the pictures you posted, they show the "pin" behind the ramrod tip instead of go'n "thru" the ramrod tip, this would be of "no benifit" whatsoever in keep'n the "tip" from pull'n off the ramrod.

RB it looks to me like the sketches are of the hollow plastic type ram rods that come with a Traditions or the other cheaper kits on the market. The tips are male and the rods are female.

The tapered are the type I have only used do I can't actually give an honest opinion.

FYI...I've got some hollow brass rods that are like that...
Each tip has a step-down section that slides tightly inside the main tube, then the pins go through the main tube, through the section that's been slid inside the main tube, and all the way through out the other side

Woody,.... Thanks, I never thot of "hollow" plastic ramrods, but thet makes sense if such was the case!!

I use the straight with a long jag that is tappered when I clean. I never load with the brass tip - ever.

I concave the opposite end of the ramrod just a little to fit the ball, (not more then 3/16th inch wide, maybe 1/16th depth). This is my loading end.

On ramrods without tips I concave one end like described above, but at the other end I will put an oblong cut through it about 3/8th inch from the end.

The oblong cut is about 1/8th inch wide x 1/4 inch long,,, just enough room to get a corner of the cleaning/swabbing patch to hold as I fold the patch under the end of the rod and insert it in the barrel... This is my primitive set up that I use mostly at Rendezvous and hunting...

A bit more info then what you asked, but I got on a roll... :haha:

The pins were unimportant for the question, it was the only picture I could find with the two different tips on them, so I went with it...

So, here is an updated picture...

I use long tapered jags so either style tip works for me.

Interesting observation that I just realized:
Ramrods that came with my rifles or that I ordered for a rifle all have the tapered design tip...but all the range rods I've ordered have the straight tip

The tapered one...I made the mistake of not using a tapered tip about a month ago...I had an ugly half hour getting a stuck rod out of the bbl, and it ended up costing me the tip..snapped off at the moment I just about had it cleared...Hank

After having more than dozen or so patches "marooned" in the barrel using a straight tip rod or jag, I come to appreciate the tapered versions.
Allows clearance for the patch so there is less 'binding".

I pefer the tapered, Just seem to work better to me. :m2c: :imo:  :redthumb:
