Today I realized that my hickory ramrod works well seating a .600 ball down my Colerain Jaeger barrel and I want to get away from using my modern range rod. My Hickory rod has a brass threadrd tip on one end but I don't want a screw-on .62 jag hanging out on the end of it but I swab between shots and I don't want to keep taking it off and on. What kind of set-up do some of you fellows have for an authentic look. I've got my cleaning and loading routine down pat with my modern range rod and Jag but I want to use the rifle's rod. I don't like trying to keep up with my range rod while at a shoot either.

for tips,I have used brass, deer antler, and german silver, for the cleaning end I use brass, and turn it down small enough to fit the ramrod hole, and if it is a little small ,a double patch will usually clean allright without coming off .

i leave my jag on my rod and it dont look to bad.......

An idea I got from a friend at rendezvous and now use, was; About 1/4 inch from the end of your ramrod drill a hole about 5/32nds or 3/16 inch. Counter sink the hole a little bit on both sides and file it a little oblong... You can now push a corner of the patch through this hole and use it to swab between shots... If your rifle is set up to accept a longer ramrod, say an inch past the face of the breech plug your in good shape for the rod to be even with the muzzle... If not, just let the rod hang out that extra inch... This way you can swab down close to the face of the breech plug and still have plenty of rod to grab hold of to remove from the bore... You could also thread a jag right into the tip of the rod after predrilling then epoxy it in around the threads...

I've used the oblong slot in my ram rod ( fiberglass ) for years but one suggestion if you do this to a wooden rod is to "whip" ( winding with wire or thread and sealing it with a waterproof finish ) the end to keep it from splitting the tip when you pull a tight patch out.

On the end of the rod that fits in the stock install a small brass tip, say 1 1/2" long, the same diameter as the ramrod at that end. Pin it in place as you would any ramrod tip. You can countersink this tip so that the overall length of your ramrod does not change significantly.

Through this tip make a slot big enough to tread a patch but not so big as to weaken the ramrod or alow the patch to slip out easily. ( approx. 3/4" long by 1/8" wide )

The brass re-inforces the tip so the slot will not weaken the tip. Use one end of the rod to seat your ball and when you want to clean, thread a patch through the slot in the other end of the rod and clean. When done pull the patch and slide the rod back into the stock. No unscrewing, no unsightly tip hanging out there.

I use the ramrod tips from Track with either 8x32 or 10x32 screw sizes for accessories.
; I use the wiping stick (ramrod) for cleaning at the end of the day with a normal jag, either handmade or purchased.
; Back in the early 70's when starting out in muzzleloading, we used range rods for laoding and cleaning, but now, I'd just as soon use my rifle's rod - less to carry. I'm past the rod breakage days now even with the tight combo's I use. We even tried the fiberglass rods until I found it was like loading with a long file & had to re-crown the muzzle every 200 rounds or so. It didn't take long to discard them. I did use a 1/2" nylon rod for cleaning the .69 rifle with a normal jag/tip on the end. The larger sizes in nylon worked well for cleaning without damage to the muzzle.
