ramrod tip ?

I use the tips that flair out to cradle the ball. These tips don't have a threaded hole. I'll also use a dab of epoxy to initially attach the tip. It fills in any gaps in my carving.

Where do you find them? I have only found one but don't remember where...

Pretty much any of the online ML shops. Track of the Wolf has them as do others. My PC is down right now so it's difficult to come up with sources right now. Maybe a blind search for Ram rod ends or tips would produce good resaults.

I must be looking wrong, all I see at TOW is Musket size (9/16 - 7/16) and shotgun...?

I had a place that sold a handful of smaller sizes down to at least 45cal

Look for jags on TOTW, the tips are for mounting on ramrods with female threads. They have every size and variety of jags for the ends of ram and range rods.

All my ramrods, as they came from the factory (rifle, Musket, and pistol), have Double Tipped rods; one end has threaded tip (for cleaning jags) and one tip solid (for loading).
When stored under the stock the threaded end goes in First as it is straight and not flared, try to put them in backwards and they will not fit.
My Blunderbuss had one non threaded 'ramming' end and the other end has a Worm and also goes in only one way.
One Musket (.76cal Smoothbore) only has one non tapped Ramming tip, the other end is bare...but takes a 'primitive' worm (looks like a spring).

It does seem some other manufacturers I have seen but do not own do not come this way...they are made Wrong.

i have a 40 cal flint long gun that has a 3/8 ramrod. the ramrod is just slightly smaller that the bore. every once in a while it has a tendency to grab the patch when loading. (makes it tough)
it has a 3/8 steel end that is tapped for the cleaning jag.
i am thinking of tapering down the end of the ramrod and installing a 5/6 end onto it so it has a bit of clearance around the patch.

does this sound like it would work? is this sort of thing done?

I recommend you use the nubby starter on your short starter. Ive found when using this, the patch gets folded over the top of the ball and that in turn lessens the chance of the patch catching on your jag on your 4” short starter and the jag while seating the load.
