I want to get a good range rod for my .50 flinter on the way via UPS. Just assuming that if my barrel is 39 inches, the rod should be a few inches longer. But the very longest rod I can find for sale is 37 inches. So...where should I look? Or am I wrong about the length I need?

Check TOW's offerings; I got a 44" rod for my Lancaster that is "just enough" but adding their nice jag adds another inch or so; came with a nice brass muzzle guide. Several offerings there in various thicknesses and lengths. Nice quality, solid/sturdy one-piece steel rods in 8-32 or 10-32 female threading; I bought the 10-32 - like the little extra shank thickness of the fittings. baxter.

Sounds like you have already purchased it. That is unfortunate.
Lots of vendors have rods. If you attend any large shoots there will be vendors with whatever you need.
Or, if you are a little bit handy, make your own. Stainless steel, brass, Delrin all work great for range rods.
