Mark, I recently read that rawhide was the native American and pioneers kydex. Once you use some, you will agree. Hope your project works out as well as mine.

I also used a large chew bone that I picked up at Wally World. Ol Roy brand. They come 4 to a pack. I soaked one of them in a bucket of water over night. Rolled out the wet rawhide and clamped it between two boards. This sheet will be used as a knife sheath liner.

Timber Wolf, a petunk is a hard rawhide small flask shaped container, rather than a soft leather pouch, used to hold lead balls or shot, and sometimes other items. It's easier, I think, to both fill and dispense from the petunk, plus it's nearly 100% waterproof. The one pictured in my #5 post is rather noisy, when the balls rattle around, but I lined the second one with supple leather and it is much quieter. I saw some nice ones selling for $50 and up and decided to try making one. I probably have about $8 in materials in the two I made.

Well dang, another project added to my ever growing list. : ). I started a gourd canteen last night and I have the makings of four benches cut out (of eight I need to build) for the ranges at the club. Summer in Florida means keeping some inside projects as well as outside projects. Now I have to gather materials and make a petunk! I wonder if a fellow happened to have a Kydex press that it would work on the rawhide? Maybe lay towels in the press to soak away the water? Sure would save a lot of clamping.

TW - If you try the kydex press and it works, monitor the drying so you can remove whatever you use to give it shape (I used a small pocket flask), b/c you will never get it out if you wait too long. I laid, then clamped, the very wet hide on the flask for several hours, then removed the flask, reclamped, and then put it in the sun for a couple days. The edges fused together which made it easy to trim to shape with a skil saw. I drilled 1/16" holes for the stitching. Finished them with leather dye then neutral shoe polish. Good luck.
