He-Bear,
I get down to the Lancaster area every now and then, where exactly are you buying your powder?

Swank

Just make sure to put the "LOWEX" placard on the car door and you should be fine. Should make a great impression on the family!

Unlike you, I am not a native...and cannot believe all the ridiculous NY regulations! What happened to personal freedom and responsibility? Vermont (where I was born&raised) has none of this ridiculous regulatory crap.

(b) Transportation. (1) Vehicles carrying five pounds or less of black powder and carrying no other explosives shall be marked or placarded either on both sides or on both front and rear with circular signs or decals. Every such sign or decal shall have a minimum diameter of six inches and shall contain the letters "LOW-EX" in legible black letters at least one and one-quarter inches in height on a yellow background.

Do people really put those signs on their vehicles just going hunting and shooting..or far as that goes...just bringing a lb. home from the store?

I had a similar thought when I read it...and it actually seems like it's worded backwards...even as ridiculous as such a law is, you'd think it would be worded if you were carrying MORE than 5lbs, not less than 5 Lbs...makes no sense...written the way it is, it says if you carry MORE than 5 lbs you don't need the signs...stupid.

Guess when I make my trip, I can put a copy of this regulation and "6" lbs of Goex in a locked military ammo box and be done with it...instead of the relatively insignificant amount of 1/5th of a pound (1000grns) I wanted to take just to have several show & tell shots out back !!

Thanks for the info,
Ordering 25lbs is going to save me an a couple buddies some bucks.
thanks--Willy

I actually have a can of FF Goex that I bought back in late 70's or early 80's. Still good as I used some last winter. Price sticker on the can is $5.95. But gas was about $.50 a gallon then, wasn't it? Hey, who remembers paying $.29 a gallon?

The one local retail store that sells BP in my area is up to almost $30 a pound. I buy it 50 pounds at a crack in bulk from one of the Master distributors.

Here in the Peoples Republik of Maryland , you are not allowed to have more than 5 lbs. of black powder and no more than 5 lbs. of smokeless powder , unless you get a special license  . I bought a lb. of Goex 3f in Feb. and paid $12.95+tax . Went back to the same store in Apr. , to get another lb. , they told me they don't sell black powder anymore , because it's not worth the hassle :shake: . I ended up getting it from the last place I want to shop at (the people that work there are arrogant and snotty , they seem like they could care less if you come back or not , but they usually have anything you might be looking for , I suppose they figure you're there because you've tried everywhere else) and paid around $20 for a lb. :curse: . ::

I remember .23cents/gallon in 1964 while home on leave in upstate NY after USAF boot camp

for example

(not that I know a lot of people who follow these to the letter)

WOW! ::

I read that, and then I re-read it, and then I looked it over again....
What the heck did it say? 5# is bad, more than 5# is good?

One of the most ambiguous pieces of regulatory nonsense I have ever read. I have to wonder how that would stand up in court? I suspect it would be the "intent" of the law vs the "letter" of the law.

Stumpy always gripes about NY laws governing BP....I guess now he has the right, along with the rest of you guys.... :curse:

I remember 18 cents a gallon in Tucson, Az my senior year in high school, which was '71. Don't have any BP that old though. To keep on subject. ::

Yep..back in the 60's you could get a pack of cigerettes or gallon of gas for .25cent..and come to think of it a can of beer too. Course you had to have a church key to open it.

Told my granddaughter just the other day about the OLD days when you had beer in cans that weren't aluminum and you had to use an opener on them. Kids these days, don't know what they missed. ::

I assume that means that having more than five pounds would require a special permit, if they even allow it.

When you are going south east bound on 33 from Columbus you will see a Meijers on the left and across the street is sporting/trade/loan place. It has an indoor gun range there and they sell black powder, just ask at the desk. It is around $14 to $15 dollars a pound there. Right next to it is a Speedway gas station. I think it is called Ohio Valley Trading & exchange. I usually will go to the Log Cabin for powder.

He Bear-
Thanx for the info, I'll pick some up next camping trip down. That was the name of the place I was thinking of but could not think of it. I think they also have one in Nelsonville.

Take care,

Swank

You could make a great mortar out of those tin beer cans. With a little lighter fluid and a tennis ball.A big boom and the tennis ball in the next county.Boy would I get locked up for doing that now.

I told my kids about tennis ball mortars and they just stared at me - so I made a potato launcher out of some sch 40 pipe and used a bit of BP to fire a spud. It went about 400 yards and landed in one piece but broke up when it hit ground. I had a bunch of wide-eyed little boys that day. ::
