New to the forum and the proud owner of my first flintlock - an old Dixie Gun Works Tenn. Mt Rifle in great shape. Problem is that I can't shoot it as I can't find any real blackpowder (Goex, Swiss etc.) around here. I'm looking for places in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy NY area (where I work) and the Saratoga Springs/Glens Falls NY area (where I live.) Any tips or do I have to bite the bullet and go to Gordon Jenks in Westfield MA?

I am fortunate to have a gunsmith not far from me that sells black powder. Storage restrictions made it so most places don't want to bother with it and stock the substitutes. I would try looking for a smith in your area. You could order it from him if he didn't have some on hand, or order it yourself although I never did that. Cost might be rather high that way unless you ordered several pounds. Find other shooters that would want to share the order to make it cheaper.

No gun shops carry it? :what:
They should be able to order it, you can't be the only blackpowder shooter in your area.

Yea, I was looking at Powder Inc - they seem to be the only source to sell in sub-25 lb lots. Plunking down a couple bills for powder, with a baby and wife, is a recipe for a permanent woods walk. The $35 hazmat fee is pretty steep, esp. if I only want to buy 5 lb at a time. Legally, in NY you are not suppposed to store more than 5lb of BP at a time, have to store in in a red box labelled "LOWEX" etc.

I called many of the gun stores (as well as Dicks) - anyone that supplies BP sells substitutes only.

Well what choice to you have?

A dealer is going to also get hit with the hazmat fee same as you and certainly pass that on to you in part or total.

From powderinc,
For 86.50 or $17.30/pound will get you four pounds of Goex 3FG an one pound of 4FG delivered to your door. Or just order 5 pounds of 3Fg and prime with that.

A ten pound total order for $135.00 delivered is a much better deal. Too bad you can only store 5 pounds at a time? That's really lame.

At retail per pound I bet you cannot find BP for that much less. Perhaps but then you have your travel time and get to pay sales tax.

Just tell the wife that the overall costs will be offset by all the game meat that you will put on the table. :) :front:

Hey Black Jacques,

If you want to drive about 40 to 45 minutes east of Glens Falls, you'll find Goex Black Powder in Poultney, VT at Bixby's. Bixby's mainly sells fuel oil, but they also supply the slate quarries in the area with BP for blasting. Evidently it's not as sharp of a shock and tends to break off bigger, more useable pieces, so the quarries use a lot of it. Will cost you about $15.50 or so including tax. You can also buy it in bulk from them for a lot less, but it comes in 25 lb. plastic bags if you go for the bulk and 50 lbs. is the maximum they will sell.

Hope this helps!

Bob, he's way up above Albany...seems like gasoline costs and wear & tear on cars would more than offset any savings...to say nothing of the time involved.

As an alternative, each of you might be able to look at the Forum membership listings and/or make a post to find someone closer to your respective locations to order/split a case of Goex...I think there's a lot of PA and NY folks on the Forum

Gander Mountain carries GEOX in my neck of the woods. It's in the back room, not out on the shelf. You have to ask for it.

:hmm:Black Jacques, the hazmat fee is low, as having to deal in enviromental business every day and ordering items by UPS, trust me that fee is low. Order 10 lbs and you will have enough powder to keep you going for a long time. BP does not go bad if cans are keep closed. If you E-mail me, I can give you a location in Warrensburg that sells BP. The cost as of last week was 18.00 lb. [email protected]. Bp is really not that hard to find in your location as you might think, you asked the right question and you will get help. Hope to hear from you.

I just ordered 10 lbs from Grafs, it is their private label. With the hazmat fee it came to $11.99/lb. :front:

I did purchase goex up around parksville N.Y. off of RT17 cost was $18.00 a pound ,for that price seem better to pay the hazmat fee and order the powder from gaft@sons on the internet,I think gaft @ sons goex sell for $10.99 a pound if you order 5 pounds or more may be a little cheaper then the store price.

Jacques,

Don't bother looking in "Southern" Upstate NY. Nobody carries in around here. I haven't tried the local Gander Mountain, but the one in Scranton and the one above Syracuse did not have any, and the one in Scranton gave me the "we're waiting for certification - it'll be two weeks" routine every time I stopped in (three tries over three months).

I use www.powderinc.com now, and have a couple others like J&J lined up as alternatives.

Someone at the Hudson Falls Fish and Game gave me a number to a shop that sells black powder but I have to call back when someone is home. This guys shop is around the Schuylerville and the Saratoga monument area? I'm getting low myself and will find out.
Mike
