Does anyone have any idea what this is? Or is it just an internet joke. FB_IMG_1616193521310.jpg

After WONA non-unmentionable guns became much less expensive. Many gunsmiths made a living making "custom" guns from them. More likely some farmer found some old junk in the barn in more recent years and decided to cobble together a interesting display piece...c

Well I'm not an expert but I have collected a few Dietz lanterns ..the lantern portion is what was called "Night Watchman" pattern ...the patena of both the lantern and the firearm seem to match ...the combination has some logic to it ..just as modern day defense pistols have rails with laser n lights hanging off them

The lantern pattern likely dates back to near the civil war era (not saying this is that old) up thru the 1920' or so

There were a couple different versions of the lantern with the primary feature difference being for the operator to block the light to the massive magnifying lens you see in the front ..like an on/off button ..the cheap model just burned anytime the oil flame was lit

In both cases the brightness could be controlled by a little wheel you could turn to raise and lower the wick

Also the deluxe model often had a convex mirror in the rear behind the wick to concentrate what light there was on to the magnifying exit lens

It was design as more of a flood light to keep a night watchman from side attack from the slightly smaller than 150 degree illumination area

In a totally dark situation such a a factory ..the light would have approximate that of a Coleman single mantle lantern set at just above stall speed and with the same yellow cast to it

I have never seen one like yours pictured in 50 years of casual lantern collecting ..my guess is the real deal in that Dietz made the lantern ...a gunsmith adapted the lock works and somebody had the need and know how to get it put together

I am quite sure there will be others who will know far more that I but the lantern knowledge you will find pretty well nuts on

Sword handle, horse pistol, lamp..... never sen one but could be.
However I’m out in mind of PT Bartum’s mermaid, monkey sewn to a fish, then mummified

There are a couple articles online showing this gun. As someone pointed out in one of the comment sections, there isn't even a vent in the barrel (visible in other pics online). My guess would be some sort of artistic piece.

I've seen this before, and as I recall, it is purported to be a 19th century graveyard guard's lamp/pistol. Frankly, it looks like stupid steampunk BS.
Careful what you say about the steampunk fandom.....some people criticise OUR hobbies too! We don't need to add to the online ignorance that dwells in cyberspace. I happen to be a fan of steampunk design, and find this piece interesting....even if it might be fictional. Just my 2¢

well I for one would like to have it. but why would any one put all that time ang parts & work into it, just to sit on a shelf?
