I am going to give him a call to check the cost and turn around time.
I would rather have both barrels for the versatility

a couple observations : if ya have it rifled it'll be larger than 54cal & yer mold may or may not work with the larger bore. also, in the couple months to a year that you'd be waitin' on it to get back you can be shootin' yer smoothbore & lookin' for an already rifled barrel on e-bay & such places. luck to ya & have a good'en neighbor, bubba.

I just received a used Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle which I purchased sight unseen outside of exterior pictures. I was pleasantly surprised with the exterior condition but once I dug a little deeper, I found an utterly trashed .50 cal. bore. I guess the previous (only)owner didn't know how to clean & properly lube....very sad indeed. He said it was only used for hunting season years ago and has been a wall hangar for quite a while.
After spending the entire weekend thinking about the tragedy of it all, I decided to call & talk with Bob Hoyt this morning. Needless to say, the barrel will be on it's way to Pa. tomorrow to become a .54 caliber JBMR. Really nice guy with very reasonable prices. My conversation with him really made my day and I feel great bringing the rifle back to life. Thank you Mr. Hoyt!

I would like to go the route of a new barrel if I can find one resonable enough.
I am going to talk with Mr Hoyt though if for anything just bend his ear abit and learn a few things
