Looking for recommendations for new sights on my cva 50 mountain rifle. it appearts to be an older kit made gun and shoots great. Former owner opened up the rear sight and I cant get the sight picture I like. Being a former varmit shooter/accuracy freak, and knowing this gun is not going shoot like a 22-250, what works for you and fits this gun and its 3/8 dovetails????
I wouldnt mind going with a peep or ladder sight but would rather not have to go into the tang.

Lets hear back from you fellows.

Thanks,
Brett

I have a 70's MR 45 (and 70's 32 & 36 Squirrels) - great shooters that save some wear on my others. Factory sites work just fine for these old eyes.

Easiest fix is to contact BPI if you want the original factory sites again, but unaltered. They bought out CVA so have the parts, and prices are very reasonable.

It's been a couple of years since I dealt with them, but Danny in customer service was very knowledgeable and helpful.

Many of the on-line trading posts offer sights more PC that'll fit your dovetail as well.

If you would like to keep it all original, Deer Creek should have the replacement sights for the CVA Mountain Rifle also. Here is their phone number 1-765-525-6181

The Mountain Rifles are constantly going up in value. Since you have an older rifle, I think keeping it original would maintain it's value better and even though fairly primitive, they are still a good sight.

PS I wouldn't do a lot of modifications on the rifle, unless you have to use different sights due to vision problems or whatever... but you can get pretty creative with the 3/8" dovetails and come up with something similar to a multiple leaf rear sight for various ranges... and you won't have to D&T or otherwise cut into metal.

I just ordered some stuff from CVA for my Mountain Rifle, and they had it in stock. Try them first, then Deer Creek second.

I fitted the new sear last night. Took about an hour of dinking around with it and the stones to get the lock working right.

Williams makes an adjustable rear sight with mulitple inserts.

I prefer the one on the far right. It is very fast! You can get them from Brownell's.Pick out a nice bead to go with it. Hang onto the ones you remove. :winking:

If you aren't going PC with the sights I like the fiber optic sights- line up the 3 dots and let one rip. If you prefer PC I have the original sights off my 45 CVA that was from the mid 70's.
Brass blade with iron rear sights. Both are wedge attachments.

Well this brings more questions...
any idea what my mt rifle is worth??? 50 cal, barrel in the white brass furniture, 32x 66 barrel

Is there a peep or ladder sight that will fit the 3/8 dovetail?

The original sight will work if replaced with one that has not been opened up. This one has had a saw file put to it and is pretty wide, wider than I desire.

Thanks,
Brett

I know I paid a heavy toll for my factory built MR because of its condition - way more than it sold for new. No idea if it was a good deal or not as I've seen very few 70's era 45's ever come up for sale to compare to. I simply paid the price because I wanted an early one in good condition and in 45 instead of 50. The value of a kit build still in the white would probably depend on how good of job was done on the build and whether a new buyer wants to discount for finishing the barrel and/or furniture/wood if needed. Don't know - maybe they are available rare enough now not to matter.

You mentioned you don't want tang sights. I have them on a Cherokee and one of my Hawken's and they work well, but my old eyes would be hard pressed to use a peep way out on the barrel where the dovetail is. If the "ladder" sights you are referring is the long dovetail mounted open rear with a "ladder" elevation bar, that's what came on my MR and correct factory replacements should be available at BPI or Deer Creek as already suggested. Similar from several of the mail order suppliers would also be available if you don't care about staying factory.

BTW, I'm a long time P&V hunter too that also picked which hair to hit. But with the sidelocks, as the range gets longer the "A" in MOA becomes "Animal" friend. :winking:

I have only just had fitted a T/C click adjustable rear sight and front sight to match to my CVA Mountain rifle and is a big improvement to the primitive sights it came with. Had to drill and tap the barrel to fit the T/C sight.
