I have a 54 cal TC Hawken barrel with a 1 in 48 twist (I think). I ordered a Williams FP tang site last January and the darned thing is held up in customs, God only knows for how long. Anyway, I mounted a short weaver rail where the rear sight would normally go then mounted a Tasco red dot sight on that rail. I intend on using this barrel for hunting this fall. My other barrel is a 1 in 66 twist 54 cal PRB barrel.

A 1:66 twist in .54 caliber would be nice to have in a Hawken. Yeah I know, many people prefer to use a conical type projectile but for this ole boy, I'm glad to finally get back to patch and ball.

With that said, IMO, for projectile choice and sights, a man owes it to himself to use whatever he has to use to keep hunting. On my New Englander, due to a fuzzy sight picture, I installed a TC peep and a fiber optic front bead. That made all the difference.

I realize your situation, in terms of not being able to secure a peep. Its truly sad that governments would go to such extremes.

Good luck to you whatever you choose to do, and keep your powder dry.

I have several barrels for different uses. One of them wears a Bushnell red/green dot sight and shoots 1 inch groups at 50 yards with conicals. I set it up for hunting but aged out of the hunting scene before using it.
