I don't use steel wool at all in the wood finishing stage. Just fine sandpaper and scotch pads. I do vacum the stock frequently during the whiskering of the wood.
I like LMF stains as I've had good luck with them.
I only use Jim Chambers original oil finish to both seal and finish. Usually around 8 coats with the last couple hand rubbed in.
