Is it necessary to remove a brass sight from barrel before browning with Birchwood Casey Plum Brown?

No, I browned mine with both in, center, file ends of brass sight flush with barrel and brown...You may need to make a slight adjustment when sighting in but, that's how I prefer to do it..

do it right ... remove them so you get a good finish under them, you can also clean and oil the dovetails that way after your last app of browning. its not like its a hard thing to do.

It’s a lot easier to do a good job with the sights out. Short cuts often show on the finished piece.

Thank you for recommendations, I knew it should be removed but wondered if it was really necessary. I guess it really doesn't need to be removed, but as I've been told before, the better the prep work, the better the results.

If you don't remove it you will get rust starting under the sight and then bleeding onto the rest of the barrel.

what about the underlugs on the bottom of the barrel, remove or no?

You don't remove the lugs, why remove the sights? To each their own, I suppose.

YMMV, but my preference is to install sights and sight in the rifle while "in the white"; then brown or blue with everything on the barrel. Never had a problem with the finish bleeding somewhere, and no risk of dinging or scratching the brown/blue while drifting or filing sights.
