Have tried removing an old breech plug (because of a cracked tang) with no success. Used pipe wrench with padded jaws and cheater bar, but plug would not budge--also soaked the end in penetrating oil and still no luck. Feel that I am about to break something--maybe just give up--or use torch?

thanks

Are you talking about an original gun? I've never worked on a modern made muzzle loader but i've taken out many original breech plugs...though invariably it requires the use of heat. A propane torch will probably work but I generally use acetelene, a small flame, just enugh to get the bottom of the barrel slightly red. At that point they nearly all come out without too much trouble. There are limitations to this if there is original finish involved...it will definately effect it.

If the barrel has a drum for a cap lock or a touch hole liner take that out before you try to unbreach the barrel. Often the drum or touch hole liner will lock the breach plug and keep it from turning.
