i have returned to using Goex after years of substitute abuse. it took a flintlock to show me the light. today i bought the first lb of real bp in years. i will be making smoke with it tomorrow even if its snowing/raining. i don't think i'll mess around with a layered or duplex load, but thanks to all that gave info or advice. hell, i'm also going to use it in my caplocks.
what makes Swiss brand powder worth the ten buck price difference? i just bought Goex, but they also had Swiss and Schutzen brands.

Amen Brother Walruskid1!

Testify, testify!

I've never tried it, but I understand Swiss is much cleaner burning and the smoke forms images of topless mermaids swimming through the clouds seductively as it slowly drifts away.

I have never had good luck with pb substitute in a hammer throw.
pirodex needs! a hot primer, 209 is the best but we ain't goin' there. Goex gives me great shots time after time.
smells better to

I like the smell of a freshly opened can of black powder, it's the "new car smell" of propellants... :haha:

IMO, Goex is outstanding...have used 4F, 3F, and 2F for a few thousand shots now and wouldn't change a thing.

And when comparing pure price/performance ratios to expensive powders like Swiss and the new Goex Express, regular Goex is far superior in that regard, particularly if you like to shoot a lot.

And when you try it in your caplocks, you'll probably notice ignition speed is a little sharper as well.

The finest grades of sporting powder have always been more expensive.

You put the ingredients in an edge runner mill and switch it on. Half an hour later you have blasting powder, half a day later you have the makings for sporting powder only it will still need to be pressed so that the nitre flows, intimately, around the other ingredients. Then drying, corning, polishing and dusting, plenty of chances to cut corners and knock a buck off the price but you usually get what you pay for

I would like to try Swiss, but can't get it around here..just bought a lb. of Goex 3f a couple days ago at Basspro shop and it was $20.00..ridiculous price. That place is making a fortune..everyday the parking lot is full.
I been shooting 3f in my .54cal but today I shot 2F in my .62cal. smooth-rifle and man the 2f sure leaves the pan much wetter (3f leaves no moisture at all). Soon as I shoot up all the 2f it's nothing but 3f for me. I do prime with 4F.

I gave up on the subs years ago. Even when I owned some inlines I shot 3F Goex in them with great results. My daughter-in-law gave me a pound of Pyrodex RS for Christmas(better than a tie I suppose) I guess I'll try to burn it in my caplock.

Swiss burns very cleanly and leaves much less residue in the barrel than Goex. It also gives considerably more velocity for equal measures than Goex, so you can reduce loads about 15% and I also find it to be more accurate than Goex. Swiss is the best performing powder I have ever used. Whether it is worth the price is something you will have to decide. For general plinking, punching paper and hunting, I would say no. If you are shooting competition and want to give yourself every edge, it might be worth the extra money. Buy a lb and try it for yourself.

If your supplier has KIK blackpowder, you might want to try a lb of it, also. It also burns cleaner than Goex and gives more velocity for equal measure. I would rate it between Goex and Swiss in performance but it costs less than Goex.

Mmmmmm. Silage drippings. Mmmmmm.

So, if we believe everyone. Using Swiss FFg is like using Goex FFFg, but for twice the price. :haha:

Less fouling and 15% more "oomph". :hmm:

I've never tried Swiss, so I really don't know. I'd hate to try some and become addicted. Like smoking an Opus X cigar and then returning to White Owls.
