What irony...I go through my simulated 42" barrel handling test in real woods hunting conditions, satisfied myself it was fine so I didn't need to limit myself to a 38".

Call RICE to order a 42" swamped D-weight .58cal

Out of stock, two month wait because he's making .38" barrels for the next several weeks !

Told Rice if I had to wait 2 months just to order the barrel I was afraid I wouldn't get the whole rifle completely done in time to make a few weekend range trips before deer season.

He volunteered to shorten a 44" barrel...but checked and was out of stock on that also. Said the only D-weight .58cal he had in stock was a 38" swamped 1:72 x .016" round bottom groove barrel.
Told him I was tired of screwing with all this and that would just have to do...so its on its way.

Dixons had several 38" Rice barrels a few weeks ago. I don't remember if they were 54's or 58's. They ship daily.

Are you building one yourself and can't wait or you have a gunsmith lined up and he's ready to go? Two months is not that long for a barrel.

I have no doubt...plus, I'll get actual hands on experience with round bottom grooves.

I think you'll like the round bottom grooves. I have that rifling in my .54. It shoots good, doesn't get dirty easily and cleans easily.

I had an Early Va Rifle built last year by John Bergmann. I wanted a 42" swamped .58 barrel, John tried to talk me into a 38" barrel instead, but I insisted on a 42". The Rifle is beautiful but after toting it through the woods this deer season I wished I had gone for the 38".

My TN rifle by Matt Avance has a 44" Rice "C" weight in .54 and I don't find it unwieldy. What WAS unwieldy was the same rifle I sold off that had a 42" straight octagon GM barrel 1" across in .54 caliber. I used to call that one "Heavy Metal" and the new one is Long Tall Sally. :)

 If I hunted with that I would have to carry a grease gun with me to grease the wheels on the dolley toting it ! ha ha ha ! :rotf:

Roundball,
I think you made a great choice. Black powder being what it is there will be only a very slight difference in velocity. You will have an extra 10 inches of sight radius over you TC's, believe me it is enough. You'll never miss the extra four inches of length on the gonne since you have never had it. If you love the gun you built you will be happy.

Rice Barrel Co is right here in NC...went with the 38" barrel...which is actually the length barrel I'd started out wanting in the first place...my breech plug will extend it to 39"...that's long enough for me.
(6" longer than my 33" GM .58cal barrel).

My plan is to get a July delivery (knowing August will also work) so I'll have a few weekends to run a couple hundred balls through it, get it sighted in with a deer load by the end of September.

That's how it all starts. 33" barrel to a 38", then to a 42", next it will be a 44" and then one day you'll be loading your 48" barreled gun horizontal and wondering how you got to this point. :rotf: :rotf:
I think you made a good choice. That should make a fine hunting gun.

My Colerain barrel has round bottom grooves. They..... are....... wonderful. Clean up is really fast.

I would say they are very common, except for the factory guns and GM barrels. Yes, you will love the round bottom barrels.

Bill,

You will like the 38"

I had a 62 cal Virginia with a D weight and it was a bear -

She was a joy on the bench but way to much in the woods.

What style gun did you decide on?

Have you talked to anyone about a blank ?

If not I would give Wayne Dunlap a call - He is quite amazing - You always get more than you pay for and he and his company are a pleasure to deal with.

I think you are going to enjoy this project.

BirdDog,

When I got it I was 19 years younger. It must have gotten heavier over the years? :rotf:
