Well very impressed with the knowledge you guys have. Here in the UK only handguns you can have now are airpistols, or ball and cap. Yep the HOME OFFICE forgot ball and cap when they imposed the ban back in 97. I have only recently purchased a REMINGTON 1858 .44 by EUROARMS and I am on that learning curve. I'm using 23g (777)with 454 balls with fair success at present, tried .451 but found them a tad small. In fact on one occassion a ball moved forward and jammed the cylinder. I was using 25g of 777 at the time though which I believe is 777 max in Remingtons. This site though has helped me to get to grips with minor problems that I have encountered. Besides cap and ball I shoot a scoped 7.62 Enfield MK4 this may have an old action but its as smooth as a knife through hot butter.
After the ban in 97 many UK shooters tried C/B but have found it too much bother. I myself don't find this and actually enjoy using them. Theirs a few C/B SHOOTERS in my club mainly old salts. The younger shooters show no interest in them whatsoever. Their's only me who has an interest probably because my dad fed me on too many westerns when I was a kid. Anything to do with the American west genre fascinates me always has, and always will. Well folks must go, as I'm goin down the club to do some shootin.

JohnW1...That's quite a ride, but well worth the trip.
You mentioned owning the MK4, is there a problem with that when it comes to current gun laws in your country?

I have found out, over the past ten or so years, that one can get by quite well with just muzzleloading arms. I have a gun safe full of smokeless rifles, some haven't been fired in years...been too busy with black powder stuff. I got my first muzzleloader sometime in the mid 1950's and my interest waxed and waned over the years. However, over the past few years I have found nothing, so far, that I did...or could do, with the smokeless that I haven't been able to do with a muzzleloader. (I was never a long range varmint hunter, although I do have the rifles to it with.)

I see recently where you may be loosing the "Fox Hunt", a very princely / gentlemanly, time honored hunt that I've always admired, and wondered at.
Not completely understanding the game, I sometimes find my self on the side of the horse, sometimes the fox, sometimes the rider, but always excited. Ya gotta love it!
It seems that once the "anti's" get their foot in the door, there just ain't no stopping them!

Anyway, Welcome to the forum...make the most out of your black powder experience. You will find it very rewarding.

Many thanks good people for the warm welcome.

Rus, no problems with rifles in the UK as long as of course you have your FAC, club member, and shoot on Ministry of Defence ranges. Semi-autos only in .22 are OK note at the moment.
Yep afraid gov't in the UK is anti everything. Mr&Mrs Fox like Tony though. This could get very nasty as the landowners and gentry are refusing to let maintenance staff on to their land. And what's on their land? electricity pylons that feed the big cities. Yes could get interesting. Just finished cleaning the old smoker, wife suggested cleaning it with an old electric Braun toothbrush, wow did the trick. She's not just a pretty face after all.

Welcome! But there is no such thing as too many westerns, the quality has slipped though since John Wayne checked out.

Welcome! Westerns, eh? I was born and raised here in Arizona, so there's plenty of "Old West" history out here!
Funny thing though, the Italians made better westerns than we Americans did! :shocking: :: On another note, perphaps you could get together with Squire Robin, another Brit on this forum. He's got tons of cool muzzleloaders (or at least access to them, I don't know if he owns them all). Again, welcome! ::

Talking to a guy the other week ex Hong Kong Police Officer showed us all his bullet wounds while serving out there. Sorry to the point, he goes out to New Zealand quite often and they take down deer there with .22's. Told me its common practice to drill out the bullet, add a drop of glycerine, or mercury seal the head with wax and off they go.

Welcome JohnW1. Only cap 'n ball in Merry ole U.K.? Pity. We had a fellow take a Iron Mounted Southern Rifle class and he left it here until he got permits to bring it to the U.K. It had to go to a proof house first (understandable).

Before he brought it over I suggested he replaced the breechplug with a drilled out one. Install a cord and a lamp fixture and bring it in as a lamp.
