Rifle Cases

I now have a flintlock rifle, but no case except the cardboard box it came in. I can't seem to locate anywhere on the Web gun cases made of wood or plastic that are long enough for a long rifle for under $300. Mine is 60 " long. The only thing I can find is canvas or sadle blanket. I don't think that is enough protection for such a nice gun when taking it to the range and filling up the pick-up truck.

Check the mail order suppliers listed here under member resources. I have found rifle cases made from Elk hide, and other leathers that are long enough. These are soft cases, and if you are wanting a hard case, you either have to make your own, or buy one, and they are expensive in those long sizes. You will want one hard case if you contemplate taking that rifle hunting where you may have to fly to the destination. Even then, you may want to remove the lock from the gun and transport that in your other luggage.

The blanket cases will protect your rifle as well as any leather case with the possible exception of rain. The leather will be more water proof, but the blanket will provide equal protection fropm abrasion or bumps. When I fly, I use a case that I made from PVC sewer pipe. I put my Hawken in the blanket case and that in the pvc case and then pack in enough padding to keep it from moving around in there and it's good to go. The PVCcase is really easy to make. Just cut the pipe to length, use PVC pipe cement to seal up one end with a cap and then I used pop rivets to afix two straps and buckles to a cap on the other end. I painted mine, but I have seen others that are covered with cloth or leather.It may not be PC, but iot's inexpensive and effective. It also works for bow cases, rod cases and just about anything else that is long and skinney.

Hard to beat saddle blanket. How rough can you be just going back and forth from the range.

Get a piece of PVC drain pipe big enough to handle the width of your gun and line it with soft sheepskin material. Put a padded cap on both ends and it will work pretty well. Or you could cap the pipe and saw it in two down the entire length, hinge one side, and line it with something cushiony. Add latches on the opposite side and maybe a handle. Hey, don't laugh, it works.

That looks like a good case for transport to the range or hunting camp! I just can't believe there arent any cases made in plastic that are long enough to hold a long gun. Someone must certainly make one?

I've got a hunting pard that has fashioned a case he uses to take to and from the range or when he's going on a hunt in the truck that he's fashioned out of a pair of old neoprene chest waders. He's cut one leg off and his GPR fits very nicely and safe while in transit.

This looks like a good case. Are they black? Are they made from the heavy cloth used in modern military case such as those for AR15 Etc?

Yes thanks for the post. I have had one of those about ten years. I think they are made by Ok. Leather Co. I also think that if you were to use mink oil on it, the water would roll off it. :thumbsup:

Has anyone had problems with rust caused by the metallic salts used to tan most suede and modern leathers? That's why I use vegetable tan hides on knife sheaths, but my blades are neither browned nor blued.

I've used blanket, horse blanket and soft leather fringed cases made for each of my ML's for decades with no problems. But I don't store the rifles in the cases at home and only use them when I take the rifles to rondy, hunting or the range. So they may stay cased for up to a week or two at the longest is all... FWIW.

I purchased two hard plastic cases 72 inch in length from Cabela's two years ago that will hold two flintlocks each. Don't recall the manufacture, but will look tonight when I get home. Try Cabelas

I was warned --never store a long gun in a leather case for extended periods of time due to rust problems developing???? Id rather be safe than sorry. Cabelas does cary a case for 60 inch guns but Im now thinking about using the white pipe idea and simply putting 2-- 31 inch pieces together with a hinge. I can simply slide my silicone socked gun into it when traveling to the range. :thumbsup:

I you oil your guns, and keep the guns and the leather case in a cool dry place, you will not have any trouble with storing the gun in a leather case. I have stored my Ml rifle in its leather case since I bought it back in the late 1970s, and have had no problems with it. My leather case is Tanned Elk hide, but I don't think it makes a difference. The key is to keep the gun in a cool dry place. I store mine in a closet in an air conditioned environment, that keeps it cool and dry during the humid months, and dry and cool in the winter, since there is no heat vent in the closet.

Yes, I have had problems with acid tanned leather. I bought a Mtn. Man knife sheath from a fellow in La Paz Co. Arizona. This fellow makes what looks like good hand stitched products.
About 2 Months latter I found the finish on a very nice custom blade ruined. The acid or salt in the leather had eat away at the steel, very bad. This guy is using low grade acid or salt tanned leather. I will have to hunt him down some day. :cursing:

Redwing,that's why I only use oak-tanned or rawhide for knife sheaths. Brain-tan would probably be okay. But latigo and such-like leathers are treacherous!
