Thanks for the reply. I'm going to work on a cheap stainless steel blade with some nephews. Will this also work for stainless?

Before Heat Treat, Yes.
After H/T I doubt you can get the file to cut it.
If the file will cut you can put it on most anything, Even a round surface.

 

Nice, I'm liking it a lot. While I really like some of the dressed out and engraved, ect. knives, it's hard to beat a simple classic like that. :hatsoff:
