Have to tried soft maple (Red MAple) bark?
I have used it as well as sumac and walnut hulls for dying. I would try a scrap piece first to see how it colors before doing the piece you are working on.

Ive read several of your posts and replies. I dont think youd be the type of person that would be happy taking a short cut of sorts. May I humbly suggest a web search like I did to find black walnuts...actually what I did find was ground black walnuts almost in dust form. I bought 1 pound to dye my white frock. I wanted a chestnut brown color and the 1 pound did the trick. I wish I could remember the place and if I find the receipt I post back to you. Ft Frederick is coming up and you can find anything like that there for sure---Im looking to get 2 more pounds to have on hand. However I do have about 20 black walnut trees here ---its easier using the powder.Pour into the wifes OLD pantyhose without holes...I doubled them then tied the end shut...Bring to boil in large pan-tub of water then soak....I let mine stay in for an entire day.
