Howdy Everyone!
I am new to this forum. I am looking at a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken.

Does anyone have any experience with this Rifle?

I currently shoot a Lyman Great Plains 54 Cal. Percussion.
Thanks for your Replies.

For not a lot more money you could get a used custom or a new semi custom.

I have one, mine was in the first shipment to the U.S.

From what I have read here, they are a close fairly close copy of an original Hawken.

The metal to wood fit is excellent. The flame colors on the trigger guard, tang, butt plate, toe plate and lock/hammer are very nice, the best that I have seen on a production rifle. The rust brown color on the barrel is excellent.

The finish on the wood (walnut) is excellent, my only thought is that the wood should have had more figure in it for the cost of the rifle. I do have to crawl up the stock some, as it has more drop than I am used to. Each person is built differently; some will find the stock a perfect fit.

I was recently told, you don't hold a Hawken against your shoulder like a modern rifle. It fits at the transition to the arm such that the toe of the buttplate actually is under the arm pit, and the rifle points across the body, not perpendicular to the body. I have yet to try how to properly hold a Hawken rifler, but will try the recommendation this week.

I really do like the front silver sight, it really stands out.

Accuracy, I have only shot it once so far so I cannot really go into what the gun is going to be capable of. At 50 yards, off the bench 5 shots touched with 70 grains and .015 teflon and .530 ball. I shot it in offhand match that day and did okay with it.

The rifling is cut very deep. I did find some patches that were cut, but I was not surprised with the deep rifling and it being a new rifle.

I paid about $750 for mine in walnut; I bought mine from Flintlocks Etc. I see that Cabelas has them at $1,100 and it has the maple stock. It seems when I bought mine maple was $250 or so higher than walnut, Flintlocks Etc. has a 10% off sale at this time.

My only regret with buying the rifle is not spending the extra money to get the maple stock, but then again I am frugal with my money.

Hello from Germany,

a member of my ML-group have one. He is very satisfied with the finish, handling and accuracy. But in comparison to the GPR of newer production they are also not much bader. The only thing is the area arround the nipple which is more p/c. A few weeks ago there was a thread where the two rifles were fotographed one over another. There was not much difference and the GPR is a straight shooter, too.

I got a rocky mountain.
It is a good shooter and it is quite well made for a factoy-build rifle.

The tang area where the nipple is has that correct "shell-form" that prevents you from getting hit by sparks or parts that split of the cap. (Hope I got this explanaiton right and understandable. Sorry for my not always perfect english)
Many factory hawkens don´t have this special detail.

It shoots very well with .535 Roundballs and 65 grs of powder.
My favorite are maxiballs at the moment. Shoots hole in hole with the same load of 65 grs - if the shooter is able to point the gun always on the same spot, unfortunatly I´m not always able to...

I also agree to the stock-choice of RDE. Save the extra money for the maple stock and spend it for powder, lead, bullet molds, etc.

And when you think of a pedersoli in a "plains rifle style" you could maybe also take a look at their tryons. It´s in my opinion a bit different balanced but also a fine gun that brings the same accuracy.
Maybe you can go to a shop somewhere and take both models in your hands before you buy.

Many greetings from bavaria

That new Rocky Mt. Hawken is shown on the Dixie Gun Works website at $695 with a walnut stock. Look for it in the "New Products" section. Le Grand

I got mine at Dixie for $650.00 about 4 mos ago. I see they have gone up to $695.00 already! I like mine alot. It is a great shooter. Take a look a recent target.

The only thing I don't like about this rifle is the color case hardening. Sure its beautiful, but not P/C. I'm in the process of browning all the case hardened pieces.

Hello Chainshoot!

I like your loads up to 120 grs FFg. You are a real Hawken shooter.Do you use any wads?

Greetings from Bavaria.

Chain Shot,

It's my understanding that case colored furniture with a rust blued barrel and rib is a period correct configuration for a plains rifle, according to this reference to comments by Don Stith: Link

No, I don't use wads. I use 120 grns of Goex 2Fg. Speer swaged .530" rb, and T/C .018" wonderlubed pillow ticking patches. And the new Remington #11 percussion caps. Oh, and there is no cutting of patches by the rifling grooves, or burn through.

And you have no burnt patches with this hell of a load ? I wonder about this. So the patches are well lubed.

romeoh,

I did not address the Tryon as 1895man asked about the Rocky Mountain Hawken, I have both rifles.

If I had to make a single choice between the two (2) rifles, I would have to go with the Tryon. It fits me and is accurate, what else can one say.

They are just the Thompson/Center, off the shelf, prelubed patches that I buy at G.I. Joes.

Thank You for all the great information. I was visiting with my son about this and he said,"I really don't like my Austin and Halleck in line" "I prefer the looks of the Lyman Great Plains" ---Well, you would have to hit me with a 6 foot lodge pole to knock the smile off my face.
I called Dixie today, they said they had 1 Rocky Mountain Hawken left in Maple, and 40 on order from Pedersoli. Well, the next thing I knew it was ordered and on its way.
Now my son and I can Hunt Traditional Together,If I can just Draw out here in Utah.
Thanks again for the Great Replys, this is a good forum.
If you all have any favorite loads I would like to hear.
Don,
