There are allot of things "acceptable" these days just because enough people use the term wrong enough times, now it's acceptable.
Yes! that is how language develops.....If it didn't we would all be speaking some ancient form of grunting gibberish. :haha:

I have wondered for some time why most people refer to the small lead spheres so many of us launch with glee and enthusiasm refer to it as a "round ball".

Isn't that somewhat redundant?

Are there square balls; or perhaps octagon balls?

Because we are supposed to.
This is a family forum, you can't say words like "redundant" here.
And, I haven't looked lately. :2

"Ball" is the standard ammo issue for any live military ammunition. Whether it's conical or round.

Ball was/is differentiated from canister, tracer, shot (which could also be a single sphere), dummy practice, etc.

The only times I have seen "ball ammo", they were always associated with military-issue ammo. I, therefore, assumed that "ball" was a moniker for FMJ bullets since that's what all the US military ammo is.

In military usage "ball" refers to a singular projectile or plain, ordinary round of ammunition ....Other names are given to multi-projectile/ special purpose rounds. In other words "ball" is used to distinguish one type of ammo from another and does not necessarily designate shape of the projectile.

In the English language, "ball" is singular and "balls" is plural....
