most all ball i shoot out of smooth bored guns are .020 under bore size.
If you're shooting bare ball, I would think You're going to run into fouling problems real quick with a bore sized ball, but I've never tried it.

Mike, I have only shot three big balls, but the bore showed no signs of lead build up. Might be my secret wad lube! :hmm:

Roundball, use a big patch like Mike suggested, they will work just fine.

I bought a couple bags of Oxyoke .060-.070" prelubed patches...they seemed very full using a couple .595" balls I shot over the weekend, so sounds like they might be fine with the jug choke...and as I mentioned, I'd also be using a wad regardless so I feel optimistic...thanks

I'd be more concerned about powder fouling, I'd think you'd have to wipe after each shot or risk getting a ball stuck.
In the end, all of these guns are different and each has their own pet load. Experimentation is the key to succes!

Mike, my lubed wad really does a great job of cleaning the bore, it is the best mix that I have ever used. When shooting birdshot, with the lubed patch, you never have to clean, till you are done shooting for the day.

When your ram rod is a broom stick, I don't think that a little build up would matter much, not that I have ever had any!

Oh.................and there is .002 choke at the end of the bore, so it sizes the ball smaller than the main bore, that also helps.

Now I have given all my secrets away.........darn! :yakyak:

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf: well, I still have one!

How big of a ball are you using?

0.690 (in a 12 ga) with a precut round patch, I did try using a strip of patch material and cut at muzzle after short start. That was a little better but not idiot proof.

The bull is 4", three shots fired today, two shots fired last week, are slightly to the right. Could be the different time of day, or just me.

The first shot was with a lubed wad also. [left most shot]

I really like using a big ball and no patch. The lubed wad really cleans the barrel nicely.

I found some 2F in my Horn, still waiting on my new case of 2F.

have you chronographed that load? I would be interested in knowing what velocity you are getting.

Using a patch on the ball, I was getting 1100fps with the 1000 grain ball. I have not compared patched to unpatched [shotgun style], but it still has a mild kick.

It will penetrate the lenght of a deer!

Are you sure that 7 gauge ball weighs 1000 grains? I would have expected it to weigh 600 or so, but not 1000. If it does then you can certainly reduce that load a might, and get it out of that sound barrier, ( Transonic zone) range, by keeping below 1100fps. I certainly would not complain about the accuracy, but the recoil has to be more than a shove with that weight projectile. That freight car will certainly penetrate the length of a deer. I would reserve such a gun for hunting Moose, or Large bear.

paulvallandigham,

The ball is .875 dia. and comes in at 1000 grains.

There is no big blast and nasty kick, just one long push.

Young boys have shot it and thought it was Kool and wanted to shoot it again!

Heck, old boys want to shoot it too...
