Rusted 1858 remington cylinder

I just got my hands on an old remington and the was a it of rust and corrosion but for the most part it isn't that bad the worst of it is in the cylinder chambers. I already know I'm gonna have to resurface a lot of the parts but I wanted to see if anyone knew anything else I can do to clean the cylinder

Edit:I also don't have a nipple wrench that's the one thing I forgot to get when getting this

Soak it in Evaporust for a few days and it will clean to bare metal

It will also remove gun blue.

It looks like it will clean up nicely

I would boil it in water for a while after the water gets to a rolling boil

Rub on the crud with a squared of dowel to use as a scaper

When most of the crud is out

Try the Evaporust

May take a variety of the above

Don't use iron, steel, nor drill bits or you could scratch it bad

It will come out just fine and if you have to refinish (blue, black whatever), it isn't difficult

That doesn't look bad for a 150 year old cylinder, it just looks like minor surface rust to me. The Remington has plenty thick cylinder walls anyways.

Doesn't look to bad, seen worse. As long as the nipples are clear it will shoot.
Chuck a brass brush on a drill motor, put some oil on it and spin it a little. Clean them out good with soap and water, dry good and check for deep pitting.
Chances are the nipples might be difficult to remove.

This original Remington was red rust all over. Disassembled and degreased then placed in boiling water for about a half hour then soaked in oil for a day. Then rubbed down with a soft cloth.

There is also a little bit surface rust on the barrel and a bit more in the barrel I can't see too well but it looks like it might be hard to clean I saw everyone saying I could just boil it for like an hour then evaporust or something

If you boil it it changes the rust to black oxide and no further treatment is needed.

I dont really have a pot big enough to be able to do the barrel but will the pot be ruined after i do this cuz they aren't my pots and I don't wanna mess em up
