Makes perfect sense, I mean, what with all those spark and flame-less flints, pans, caps, and muzzles going off...
:shake:

So how few members did you say they have now!?

I mean that they are a dying organization, and that there are reasons for that such as you give. I may be mistaken but IIRC this website has many times the "members" and each state has only a few hundred NMLRA members on average.

And just what does the NMLRA membership have to do with "Safe(r) Use of Matchlocks" which is the title of this topic? :hmm:

Don't tell me. We're too far off track as it is. :(

I didn't introduce their rule(s) here but was thinkin'...

...there's probably a better way to manage the safe(r) use of matchlocks by a supposed muzzle loading organization than banning them. And I'm sure such has contributed to at least NMLRA's skeleton-crew membership.

I shoot both matchlocks and flintlocks, and the only unintentional ignition I've had was on a flintlock due to a mechanical failure with the lock (the half-cock failed, fortunately the piece was pointed downrange, even hit the paper).

That said, matchlocks do require training, practice, and discipline to use safely.

Petardo:

When I take one of my Matchlocks to the range, I make it a habit to cut a finger length of slowmatch. After the gun is loaded, I then light the piece of slowmatch and place it in the serpentine. After firing, the small piece of slowmatch is used up and I make sure any burning remains are safely out of the way before I reload.

Slowmatch Forever!
