This has been mentioned, but by wiping the bore after every shot, you are most likely pushing fouling down to the breech and possibly even blocking the touch hole. Some folks who feel like they absolutely have to swab the bore every time, but don’t want to push crud down to the breech, will swab the bore and stop right before the touch hole. I guess you could mark your rod for that. As others have said, you can operate this gun without having to swab every time and be just fine. I bet that will cure most of your ailments. If at some point you want to go the extra mile, you could have your touch hole coned from the inside (or get a liner, but you mentioned you don’t want that.) Lots of old guns had coned touch holes from what I understand. That really gives you just one more giant step up, though I know from experience that a strait drilled touch hole can operate pretty well without coning or a liner. Coning or a liner just gives you that much more of an advantage.
