I have a gun that I purchased "in-the-white". It was completely put together & the wood had been stained but not finished. I have started to finish it using Kelly's wood finishing oil. The more coats that I have applied, the more I have noticed sanding marks. If I sand more with fine sandpaper to remove the marks will the wood need additional staining or just additional coats of the oil finish. I know that steel wool in between coats of oil will help with the marks, but some of the marks are deep enough that additional sanding will be necassary.

Baldy,

In the white, usually means just that. Wood and metal not finished.
Obviously, someone else has begun that process for you.

Any sanding done at this point will require re-staining.

If your touch up sanding to remove the rougher sanding marks I fear you'll have to touch up those 'blonded' marks. It wouldn't hurt to go over the whole stock with a very fine grit like 600 after you've removed those blemishes. The better the prep... the better the finish. Just remember every time you pick that rifle up you see those pesky blemishes and wish you didn't take the time to staighten them out, forget about 'I'll refinish it some day'... because they're on another calender. ............George F.
