Hi everyone,

This is probably a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has a reproduction Scottish "heron butt" musket with a Snaphaunce lock, ball trigger with no guard, long barrel, and the distinctive flutes carved into the stock, like the one depicted in the painting of Alastair Grant Mor (below)

I please feel free to contact me with any offers!

Thanks!

I decided to bump this thread to see what might happen, I would be interested in any offers on any type of Scottish gun really. Thanks!

Doc White has a fantasy (?) Scottish, snaphaunce, blunderbuss with a 12 gauge barrel on it that he has sent to Track of the Wolf for sale. Last I looked it still wasn't on their Flintlock, Smoothbore, Guns, For Sale page. Go to White Muzzleloading's web page, click on, Antiques and Reproductions, and there you can find about 6 images of it.

Doc was asking $1,200.00 for it when he was selling it. Track will in all likelihood charge more.

The barrel was very cool, and the workmanship was rough to accurately reflect the times of its manufacture and the status of the person using it. I asked Doc about the workmanship, and he proceeded to tell me that few firearms of the times were as finely finished as an average American longrifle. The only ones more finely finished were those with all the bone, ivory, silver, and gold inlays scattered all over them that were made for the nobility.

The hard part would be making the lock. I don’t think anyone makes a casting set for these

Thanks for the replies! The 665 Scottish Musket from The Rifle Shoppe is not a Scottish National Longarm, with the distinctive snaphaunce lock, it is a flintlock musket with a lateral sear like the Scottish steel stocked "Dag" pistols have. No one makes castings for this lock, and to build one you have to at the very least make the lock plate. The blunderbuss is interesting, however it is very much a fantasy gun, not that there is anything wrong with that, but it will not suit my purposes.

Thanks again for the replies!

Good luck in your hunt, Tacksman. That's an objective worth pursuing. I could swear these have shown up in threads in the pre-flint forum over the years.
Thanks! I actually have a couple if threads on this subject on the Pre-flintlock section.

Having made 5 of these sorts plus two on the go I sort of know a bit about them .There are very few Originals known but they are not rocket science , bit tricky but I managed plus pistols of various sorts but Scots . The little booklet put out By Museum Restorations service written By Claude Blair & Robert Woosnam Savage is besides Whitelaws older work about the best reference . You sort of have to get your head around them but their 'doable'. What the bogey is shipping them these enlightened days ? The early 18th locks are fine but by the time the flouted Herring Butt are unlikely to be stocked with such style . Having said that they ALL varied and we have so few to really get critical But the one in the picture Ide guess is what your seeking .
Regards Rudyard
