I have had a hankering for a Scottish all metal pistol. The India made ones with a cast barrel scare me. I saw that TOW has Scottish pistol kits. I was wondering if anyone here has fiddled with one of those kits. How hard was it to put together, what was the barrel made of and how does it shoot?

Who has one? Link please.
I also have hankerings. A kit you say?

I have the recent Deer Creek catalog and saw one listed there, not much info though. It might be worth a call to find out.

Andy, I have not done any research at all, but seem to remember a kit offered by Kennedy Arms? or some such name. As I recall, they were supposedly quality kits/guns and priced to match. I have a pistol imported by Navy Arms from the 70s, one of those brass and steel guns. About all I can say for that one is it does fire; mainspring a bit weak and a piddly steel ramrod. Looked OK when I was wearing my great kilt with basket hilt sword.

 You are wise to beware of any barrel that is cast. Quite frankly, I have said this too mnay times---I do not trust any "Indian/Pakistan" manufactured gun especially their barrels are most suspect---beside generally lousy workmanship. There I said it again, for the thousandth time and my last. :hmm:

Tinker, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I was noodling around on Track of the Wolf's website and saw that they have a Scottish pistol kit. I assume that the lock isn't put together and I think I can handle that. What I was worried about is how good is the metal stock and metal barrel fit.

Well your a better man then I, because I can’t find it on Track of the Wolf's website.
Can you link to it?

Thanks

Dixie has them for $370 . If your handy " by the sword.com
' sells them for 300 as non working replicas but let you know that drilling the flash hole is all it lacks to be functional ( they suggest you have a gunsmith do it , for liability reasons ) .

Well, you know, it could have been the TRS website. Like I said I was just noodling around on the net and saw the kit; however I didn't save the site or right it down.

I'm really wary of any gun that is sold without a touch hole. That tells me it is probably made in India and only safe for squib loads. I don't have any guns that I don't shoot round ball out of.

Sorry about my link. I messed it up by adding the comma. If you click it, just remove the comma at the end and refresh.

I'd guess the TRS version also requires you drill the vent hole drilled, as do most kit guns, though it's likely a good quality barrel (though I don't know their source). The Dxie and the bythesword models (which both require drilling the vent hole) appear to be the same. The bythesword/dixie one and the mvtc seem to be slightly different, and knowing that all mvtc guns are Indian made, I wonder where bythesword/dixie sources theirs from.

Interestingly enough, the MVTC model does come with a drilled vent (as do all their guns), though it is certainly Indian.

Edit: I just sent a request to Dixie for the coutry of manufacture (it is listed as imported on their site). Hopefully they will respond.

I agree. Makes me lean toward TRS, though it will probably be a little while before I can afford it.

Widget, thanks for the link. That is the one I was thinking of. I emailed TRS to ask what the barrel and stock are made of. I hope to have an answer someday.

My experience is that they seldom respond to emails (though they have), and they're not the easiest to get by phone, but much better than email. I hope for a response too, as I'd like to have one someday.

Dixie used to state in the catalog that the guns were made in India. Actually it's odd that it doesn't now! There are still photos in there from the early '60's!

The Rifle Shoppe guns are steel frame although I would think Jesse would have it done in brass if you insisted.

I don't know who makes the barrel. He talked to me about it but I didn't want to do them as I couldn't do it reasonably, too complicated.
