The grain following thing is just like the issue in wood carving, except you are using a pointy needle rather than a V chisel or a blade. Try flipping it over so that you are cutting "down grain" rather than "up grain"
 
My favorite work was done my StumblinWolf out of Ohio. Matt was a real artist. Unfortunately I have lost contact with him.

I have done a little geometric etching, but no animals or scenes.
