Going to scrimshaw a new powder horn of mine and was wondering what would be the best tools to get started, and where I can get these tools? Going to check my local hardware store for scribes tomorrow, any advice is welcomed...Thx!

Any sharp needle or scribe will make sctatches in horn, I use an exacto # 11 knife as well. Some india ink and a sack of 0000 steel wool & go for it...Tom

Any sharp pointed object will work. I have found dental picks to be the easiest for me to hold. Since they have a nice handle already in place and are a good quality hard steel. Just ask your local dentist for any old ones he has. :idunno: :idunno:

My favorite engraving tools are the EXACTO knife with a No. 11 blade with the tip broke off about 1/8th inch and a Coulter carbon tip mechanist scribe through Coulterprecision.com __ You can also fine them on Esty.com

Horner75 turned me on to the Coulter scribe. it's a really great tool and well worth the money - improved my scrim work a good bit (but then again, sanding it off and putting a coat of wax on the horn would probably count as improvement...)

My primary scrimshaw tool is a sail maker's needle (second from the right):

And I scratch on horns and whales' teeth with it.  I did these two teeth (and many more) at sea on a destroyer in the late 1970's:

And a recent silver mounted horn:
