Set triggers spooking game?

What is the consensus here? Do you all think that a black bear or a white tail could be spooked by setting the first trigger on double set triggers? Does anyone have experience hunting with double set triggers? I have done some reading and it seems that opinions sway back and forth here.

I have read accounts where a click can scare off black bears. My ml rifles have the triggers set up so they will fire sett or unsett. The rifle I used the most until recently was single trigger so no problem there. BTW, bringing to full **** never caused an alert with whitetail for me.

Is the front trigger really heavy or is it usable?

I've killed a bunch of deer that never noticed when I set the triggers. Can't say as to black bear ain't none around here.

Some of my rifles need some adjustment as they won't fire without the set trigger engaged!

I guess a set trigger engagement, if loud enough, could spook game. It would sound rather like a twig being stepped on and broken in two by a predator.

I have had a deer look around after hearing a trigger being set, but did not run off. I did have a KLATCH with a flintlock once that sent a doe running about ten yards. She then turned around and came right back to where she had been standing. Then she took a ride in the truck....

Ok, firstly, I have never scared an animal off with the set trigger “click”. This is taking moose, elk, mule deer, whitetails and bear all with set triggers. Have only taken 3 bear with a muzzleloader though, but the furthest shot was 20 yds. All were from ground level.
Secondly, the only animal that gave any indication of hearing the “click” was my bull elk two seasons ago. Broadside at 26 paces, he froze and ears started rotating trying to seek out the source. Needless to say, it was a futile attempt as the next sound was much louder.
I wouldn’t worry. And bears being bears, if it did spook, just wait 10 minutes, it’ll be back!

I have not had any troubles with set triggers. I have a friend though that missed a buck on the move because she grabbed the set trigger instead of the front trigger. She switched to a single trigger after that.

I know the click can certainly alert them but maybe not scare them off. I usually fire my set but three of them are quite nice unset. The clicks and clacks can be mostly muffled so as not to alert game.

I have a Pedersoli Scout rifle (carbine), my second. I really like the compact size for hunting. The set triggers are so bad I don't need to use them; the front trigger is only slightly grittier and longer than the set! Still love the little bugger, but that trigger!

a little click will spook deer and bear in Maine. I speak from experience. As a kid I remember the safeties on modern rifles clicked. I learned to take them off silently.

Yes. Especially in late season for whitetail in heavily hunted areas on cold, crisp days when every sound is exaggerated and deer are already on high alert. In general, I would think a light "click" might be more apt to just alert an animal and make it stand there searching for the sound. Then, as Walkingeagle said, the next sound is much louder!

Personally, while all but one of my rifles has set triggers, I don't use them hunting. I only use them for target work, then do my hunting practice using the front trigger only. But, a close likeness may be when I've accidently "klinked" an aluminum arrow lightly and I've had deer react from doing nothing to blowing out of there.

I have had deer spook from all kinds of unnatural noises but never from my set trigger and i always use them! Greg

My hunting rifle that has a set trigger interestingly does not have an audible click when setting it. My other hunting rifles have single triggers set at a crisp 2 pounds. I also hold the trigger back when cocking the hammer.
I have had deer spook, particularly at distances under 30 yards or so.

Never happened to me? If the animule is on high alerts ya, fer sure, but grazing I doubt they would even hear mine. Maybe ya need some grease? Oh ya, they would smell the grease. Best use bear grease (on bears) Deer grease on deer? Oh hell.....no they wont spook.

Never had a problem. I set the trigger before entering the woods.

If they are close enough to spook from that noise then you are clos enough to not need the set trigger.

I know I have used a loud safety on a modern rifle to intentionally make noise to get a deer to halt.

I have never hunted Bear or Elk, but I have hunted deer for 50 years and any sound that is not natural can spook them. I have had deer pay attention to set triggers and some have not. I have never had one run off. A mature buck or doe will not stick around to something there not used to hearing.

I don't know if my mainspring is too heavy or what, but, my flint **** coming to full **** is much louder than setting my trigger, and my front trigger unset so heavy as to almost be a safety. If I'm sitting in a blind or at the base of a tree I will often **** the hammer to full and put my frizzen stall on, I'll take off if game approaches, I'll set the trigger once my sights are settling on the target. When I get up to move I lower the **** back to half ****.
