Shooting Box

Hey all! I'm new here, I've been shooting muzzleloaders for quote some time and I figured Id join this forum. I love everything about muzzleloading! I recently made a shooting box for a friend for their birthday, who is also a member of this forum, and I wanted to share! Sorry for the bad pics, I'll take some better ones later. It's oak with cherry on the bottom and redwood shelf on the inside. Maybe he will post some pics of it for me. What do you ya'll think?

nice, simple lines... by way of nitpicking:

I would have used more robust hinges.
I would have saved the cherry for another project, and used pine or fir for the bottom ...

by the way - is that a commercial shop? way too neat for a casual user ...

Very Nice! Looks more like a shooting trunk :grin: . So will it have leather strap carrying handles on the ends. Also what is the inside like. Is there a removable tray inside? I see a lot of shooting boxes in my travels to shooting events and there are no shortage of personalized options to add to them. Another really cool option is removable rifle holders that slide into dovetails on the inside walls for cleaning.

Yea, those are the best hinges the hardware store had, unfortunately. The cherry is an inch thick at the bottom of the oak, hard to see from the pics, I'll post better ones tonight! It's my uncles shop, he does wood working for a living, to say the least he's good. Thanks!

Thabks! It has brass handles, I'll post more pics later. It has a redwood tray inside, it looks cool, I'll post pics of that too. I was going to do that actually! I'm brainstorming making inserts for it. Thank you!

I like the style and design but I would have used wood that was half the thickness and lighter in weight than what you have used - to use 1" cherry for the bottom is such a waste. I would have resawn it and surfaced planed it to 3/8" - 7/16" and used it for the top & sides. But it is a nice box :bow:

Ok, miscommunication...the wood isn't 1 inch thick! If you look on the very base of the box, you can see, faintly, a 1 inch strip of cherry. Better pics comming tonight. The actual base is oak, but the cherry was there to give it a neat layering effect

Thanks for the clarification on the cherry - I now feel better. When I get "extra time" I think I will build a similar box I hope you don't mind me stealing some of your ideas. Are the sides dovetailed or box jointed - looks like box joints to me?

Nice work, but it would be way to big for me. I would decrease the size to 2/3 what you have.

I have made a dozen or so, and settled on a standard design. I will look for photos to post.

Nice! I built something similar - also with hardware store brass hardware because it was easy to get.

Brusso makes some very nice hinges (http://www.brusso.com/); also Lee Valley Tools. But lawd, they're expensive. That's another reason I settled for Ace Hardware hinges.
