I was looking at the Pedersoli Queen Anne pistols, and there is a brass and steel barrel version......

What are the thoughts on shooting brass barrels?

If Pedersoli says the brass barrel will take the same load then there is no worry about the strength. The advantage of a brass barrel is that there is no rust problem.

The thing to remember about brass is there are hundreds of different types. Some are rather weak and some are very strong. Some are ductile and some are brittle. That's why it can be dangerous to make a muzzleloading barrel out of some unknown, undocumented brass.

Now, if you know which ones of these brasses can take the explosive pressure buildups black powder will produce when it ignites and you use one of these to make the barrel, the gun will be safe to shoot. Pedersoli's engineers know which one to use.

Big companies like Pedersoli can order exactly the right kind of brass to use and get a documented material analysis sheet verifying that the brass they receive does meet the specification that they ordered. They can then feel safe in using it to make the barrels.

Personally, if I was shooting a brass barreled pistol I would recognize it is a creation of the past and use powder loads that would have been used then. In other words, enough to get the job done. No Magnum type loads.

Brass certainly varies , if new its fine But it ages yet I've seen percussion shotguns shot with these old barrels . Any barrel can burst but not with standing the great number of brass barreled guns blunder busses ect the failure rate is not commanly noted. So Brass bronze or laten .It didnt seem such a problem . The Swiss mid 17c Maker Felix Werder of Zurich championed his hammerered brass barrels 'Inventor' even engraved on some barrels . I have known brass barrels offered by Getz I think, it was at a R,vous. Its thought to be stable like soft' dead iron' barrels . I made a brass barrel pistol of Kennedy parts never shot it . .I would happily stock up a brass barrel. I made three blunder busses two had brass the other was bronze no idea of the specifications of the mix .
