I had cataract surgery several years ago. My vision is 20/20...but the target is always more than 20' away. I have tried so many different configurations of glasses, it's almost mind boggling. I know that when I can see the target and the sights at the same time, I can hit what I'm aiming at, but that doesn't always happen. I ran across a posting about pinhole glasses yesterday. I made myself a pair out of an old, scratched pair of wrap around riding glasses. Today I went to the range with my CVA Hawken. I know this rifle is capable of really tight groups, but only when I do my part. The pictures tell the story. The two strays are from minie' balls the red dots are from using my conventional glasses, and the one hole group...well that's the thing, then....shooting at 50 yds from a rest. It was all about the glasses, today  https://goo.gl/photos/NPdTyMR3MGkBvQxK9 The second hole in the lens is for pistol shooting!

Get a Merit disk it sticks on your glasses and the hole is an adjustable like a camera lens. I have used one for years now and it works well. Pistol competitors love them.

I'll agree...sorta.
I have real difficulty getting mine placed properly on the glasses. Pain in the nether regions. I seldom use. There have been threads on this. Versions can be made from aluminum cans, black electrician tape, window darkening film, etc. There are also some less expensive other makers versions on the market.

I may be forced to do something similar; disk, tape, etc. I have to wear reading glasses in order to see the front sight anyway.

hanshi, shooting glasses, shooting eye about 39" focal plane (depending on distance from eye to front sight), non-shooting eye normal distance vision. This is THE silver bullet for old eyes provided you are near sighted. If you are far sighted, sorry can't help.

I was near sighted before getting cataracts fixed. Now I see well at a distance but can't read without the reading glasses. I think I can get by okay with them.

Wow ! Never heard of pinhole glasses. I'm gonna give that a try just for the experience.

Earlier this week, I had my optometrist give me a prescription for shooting glasses much like you describe. Right eye (I'm right handed) focal plane adjusted for the front sight distance and left eye with my normal prescription.
It's strange though. With my normal prescription, my vision is 20/15 at distance and I have trifocals but, can't focus on the front sight with any of the 3 corrections.

I'm gonna be a bit upset if the pinhole works better than my new shooting glasses. :)
