What do you like to use to keep the ball tight against the wad when carrying the gun around, as in hunting? A thin overshot card?

Yep that works well when using wads.

Yup. I use two just to be sure.

I generally like and use a prb 90% of the time. But for a bare ball I use a couple card wads over the ball.

2x1 inch folded brown paper

I've use 2" X 1" minila folder paper folded in half. It works well.

Wasp nest or 1/2” fiber wad if shooting bare ball loads.

The 1x2 paper works well too..

Spanish Moss works exceptionally well as wadding. Unfortunately where is grows is very regional

I make my cartridges from modern printer paper. Once the lock is half cocked and primed I dump the charge and ram the whole cartridge ball end first. Probably I would NOT do that during the fire season though : ).
