This is probably re-discovering the wheel, but for the final shaping of the barrel channel on my Gemmer Hawken, I found that using an eight inch length of double-faced carpet tape, as wide as a barrel flat, taped to the muzzle end of the barrel on one flat, can be used to hold a similarly wide eight inch length of coarse sandpaper. You can then use the (plugged) barrel as a very stable sanding block, rotating it after a dozen or so strokes to do the next flat. Works very well! (But I'm *still* making too many beginner mistakes. I guess Zonie said a while back that a Hawken is five times as hard to build as most other styles. I didn't understand what he meant then. I do now. My next gun (who said anything about a *next* gun?) should be a breeze!
