...as an after thought after loading i developed some very slight concern about the minute ammount of modern powder that surely clung to the oiled shot and shot cup.
your thoughts would be appreciated.

I expect it will throw a better pattern with out the shot cup. Larry

Larry is 100% right. I have done a lot of experimenting making shot loads for rifled barrels, both CF and muzzle loader. Loose shot over a card then felt wad with a card overshot wad will shoot very decent groups to about 25 yards out of any bore that is .45 or bigger.

From 38 to 45 the range is about 10 to 12 yards. Below 38 it is measured in feet but still works for starlings in a Grainary.

The rifling in the bore will cause the shot cup to spin and this spinning results in a doughnut shaped pattern. If you do not use a cup, you will still have an extremely poor pattern plus a leaded bore. I know of no way to use shot in rifled bore and get a decent pattern.

There was an interesting post some time back in the hunting section that describes using shot in a 45cal rifle effectively and the process . You might look at post#1194743 as I dont know how to add link to it but it was by a member named juancho

Thanks, i'll check that out but i dont think i will try shot again until i can afford a smooth bore. i did unload the rifle into the side of an old shed from about 20 feet and the pattern looked like the great majority of shot formed an upside down cresent moon with the shot cup being quiet a bit higher, i would guess a foot but i didnt measure, it looked like it would had left a limb rat pretty much unscathed.
the wife is next inline for a play pretty and is hoarding for one of those high dollar exercise machines that look so good in the corner draped with last weeks laundry and while that peeves me to no end i am trying hard to keep mum because the only time she has ever ribbed me about my toys is when i bought a gps tracking system for my treeing feist and she has been warned a .62 smoothie is soon to reside here.

thanks much for the info, it is apprecited.

Juancho's excellent post on shot through a rifle

Click at the bottom of the pictures to see the rest of the thread on how to do this.

I have not tried this myself. This should work but I prefer my method as it does not limit the caliber. I am however going to try the paper condom idea with no plastic shot collar, to see if it improves the patterns even more, particualrly in hte smaller calibers.
