I just finished lapping a rusted barrel for a TC patriot. The question is should I reblue it? I have a recipe for an old german blueing procedure that works GREAT. The outside of the barrel is great the inside is my question. What say the experts? TIA

No, blueing/browning are for the outside of barrel. The bore should bare steel kept oiled to prevent rust.

The only reason I ask is because all of my blued from the manufacturer MLers have the insde of the barrel blued. Whats up with that?

The blued bores are most likely a result of the blueing salts leaking into the bore during the blueing process.

My guess would be that perhaps they have a dark color from being heated to "stress-relieve" them. Otherwise, there should be no color inside.

Thanks all, that answers my question. BTW the blueing recipe I have is for a hot blue using stuff you can get at a garden center and grocery store.

Well that sounds intriguing. I'd like to read about it.

I'll get it to you in the next few days. These hands were made for guns and fishpoles not typing :) :) and that was 74 yrs ago.

Post it in this forum please. It is fishing season. I need to get the boat up and running for Salmon.

I am a little apprehensive about posting the procedure as it is somewhat dangerous. Lye is one of the main ingredients.
