Last March I picked up an Armi Jager 1863 Remington repro. Made in 1975 I doubt it was fired at all or very little. Someone had put red loctite on the nipple so that was fun. The original sights were not meant for my old eyes so I removed them, had to grind them off, God knows what they used to put them on. I made a metal base on the stock and put on a vernier rear sight from TOTW along with a slip on front. Accuracy was very good at times lousy other times. Decided to buy a hooded front sight from Lyman and have a 3/8 dovetail cut for it. Not worried about the value of the piece as they don't go for much. Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest here in old types of rifles like this. Seems like the AR types or SKS have become the choice for younger guys. Well, just thought I'd add something here.

I also have a Zouave Remington 1863. Mine is an old Antonio Zoli, imported by Western Arms. Mine was made in 76. Never shot conicals out of mine but rather .570 roundball. I use .18 pillow ticking patch and 60 gr. of Goex 3f for my load. Have achieved acceptable accuracy out to 100 yards. Able to put shot groups in a paperplate.

Good luck and have yer self alot of fun my friend.

Respectfully, Cowboy

Thank you Cowboy. I cast the Lee Improved Minie which is .578 as the original minie is too small at .575 Also shoot a .575 RB with the thinnest patch. Am using 15gr of Goex and 45gr of Pyrodex on top for ignition. BP is hard to find here and expensive but not Pyrodex. Also if I use the new CCI musket caps the Pyro won't ignite. Good luck with yours, they are loads of fun to shoot.

Lyman, you mention making a metal base for the stock and attaching the vernier sight to it. Seeing my stock is that what you would do?

Yes I would do the same on that stock. I had screwed a plate on the stock then drilled and tapped for the sight screws. It wasn't quite centre though so I removed the plate, patched the holes and just used wood screws on the sights. Much easier and with plastic wood filler in the holes, then screwing it on it is unmovable now. I bought the sight from TOTW for about $75. Just ordered a Lyman Front Globe sight with inserts today. Will have to get a 3/8 dovetail cut for that.

Lyman, I wound up buying sights from Williams Sights. I have a ghost ring rear and a white dot front. I took it to a gunsmith yesterday hoping the dove tail was the same but he’s going to have to file them down to fit.

Looks like it will be towards the end of the year before I know what I have.

I had aWilliams rear on another I had, they are good sights. If I remove the apature from the tang sight it could be used as a ghost ring. No idea what a dovetail will cost.
