What tools do you cut the notch with - I assume a triangular file and go slow but I want to make sure I am using the right tool for the job.

I cut them with a triangular file, screw head slotting file, hacksaw, or Dremel tool.
Any of them will work depending on what shape you want the notch.

Good to see another South Dakota person here.
It would be my pleasure to be of any assistance to you that I can.

Good to also know another South Dakotan- a good friend of mine got me into it but moved away (BTW, which part of SoDak are you in?) The only other hunters I know who do muzzeloader use those $#line contraptions, lol!

I got my kit today and it seems the dixie hawken has a good set of steel sights unlike most of the other hawken kits. I guess I might stick with them, but I appreciate the tips anyway.

Always good to learn a few things. Seems were getting some white stuff this weekend, perfect time to fire up the woodstove in the garage and get to work on a new project!

Good luck with your kit, keep us posted on the what and how of your kit as you work on it.

Although I call Alabama "Home Sweet Home" now, I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. When I retired from the military we experienced the Blizzard of '82. A week of -26F and more than a foot of snow (plus the drifts and wind) and here I am. I get to hunt from October to January down here so my bow, black powder guns, and center fires get a lot of exercise. We can shoot a deer a day down here and any excess can be donated to the needy. Good deal for all and once over 65 the state gives you free rights to hunt and fish. Enjoy your new rifle and be sure to post pictures. Sorry if I was off subject but it sounds like you received some good useful info on various sight choices.
