Or the sign at the local Amish market meat counter, where they offer "capon", and I overheard a lady asking what that was, and before the clerk could answer I told her, "It's a bird that tastes a lot like chicken." The clerk thought it funny....she didn't get it.

Dang it Dave :cursing: I have at least four good lines about what a "capon" is..... :( but I can only talk about Washington D.C. in the American Politics forum.

Our chickens eggs will last 30+ days as fresh when you do not clean them.

Checking an egg for freshness is easy if it sinks in a pot of water good if it floats toss it out.

Carrying eggs on a treck? Boiled or pickled will get them there without breaking. Want fresh basket eggs layered in hay will work.

I had a really good recipe for pickled eggs, way better than those bar eggs...it came from a book entitled "A guide for new wives".. Or something like that....the book when I saw it was in a shambles. it was from the 1800s and told a new wife how to do everything from butchering to making poultices...sewing, pickling etc.....
Been looking for a long time to find that book again but to no avail... :shake:

Thanks Sean .....great link. I don't think it is the same book but it is very similar and the pickled egg recipe is very similar to what I remember ..... if not the same.

I see also that there is instructions for corn on the cob ( for that argument) and cod recipes for someone looking for those...
