I really need a sling for my GPR.Haven't been able to figure out a good way to attach one to the front of the rifle. All suggestions greatly appreciated. Frank

The typical attachement is done at one of the thimbles. One of the attachments used to attach a sling to a barrel on a modern rifle could probably work. They look like this and are commonly available.

OTOH, I have carried my gpr over hill and dale for almost thirty years without a sling. Why do you feel you need one?

Easiest one I ever used was from Dixie. Do a search on their website for "sling" and then look at the AL0100 Universal Rifle Sling. Takes about 10 seconds to put it on or take it off. I used to use it to carry my rifle while hiking in, took it off while hunting, and then put it back on again on the way out after finishing the hunt.

I have one of those lace up slings for my Trade rifle, and have the clamp on the ramrod thimble up front. I think it looks good, and I pesonally wouldn't have a rifle without a sling.

Good offerings from Dixie. I personally prefer the AL0630 or AL1060, but it's a matter of personal choice. Track of the Wolf, The Possible Shop, The Log Cabin Shop, October Country and others carry similar items. Shop around.

I have one on a TC Hawken that has a different thimble to use a standard clip-on sling swivel on the front and laces on the butt end. Not sure where it came from, it was on a gun I bought off a member here a while back. Perhaps you could check with TC for the thimble, you would probably have to use a different screw but I would think it would work on a GPR.

I carryu a length of 2" wide leather or woven sash like material with leather loops on either end which can be used when needed on any gun I choose. No hardware required, I generaly only use it to shoulder the gun when packing out game.

On my first GPR I used the rig Marmotslayer posted, but used a loop on the base of the sling rather than installing the stock stud. It works really well, plus I can unscrew the top mount and restore the GPR to "original."

But I discovered the sling was in the way all the time when hunting. I use it for carry, especially when dragging out a deer, but it hangs in the brush while actually looking for game.

I ended up getting one of these and using it with my second GPR. It worked so well that pretty quick I was using it on the first GPR as well, ignoring the top stud entirely.

Now I keep it in my pocket on all hunts, no matter which of many muzzleloaders I carry. On or off is a breeze, but I've never bothered to come up with a better top-end connection so I can see my preferred low sights with the loop on the barrel. There are solutions out there, but I don't really need them, the way I use a sling.

To answer the first question, I use a sling to carry the rifle not to shoot it. The country I hunt in often requires both hands to get around in. Thank you all for your responses. I make all my own leather equiptment and just needed an idea on the design of one. Several good ideas from you all. Thanks a million. Frank

You sound like a kindred kind of hunter, Frank.

Since you're making your own, the key for me is in a secure attachement at the butt. A simple pass-through loop that sinches up on the stock right below the trigger guard is good. But look close at the butt end on the one I linked. That works well too, while giving you a little more length between the attachment points on the mounted sling. That has allowed me to pass my head and one arm through the sling for carry "across" my back rather than on the shoulder. That's a great boon when the country gets really rough, especially for scrabbling uphill.

There are several ways of making & mounting them. On a GPR, on front I would mount it thru the underrib. Put a screw on each side of the cross screw to keep the rib secure. Mount the sling swivel in Front of the RR pipe so it rests on the pipe, this way when ya put the RR back the swivel is not in the way. Otherwise every time you put the RR back in the swivel catches & blocks the RR from going in.

On the butt you can sling it or install a button.
