One of the claimed benefits of using Slix Shot nipples is the ability to use a lighter main spring because the back pressure of the charge firing is diffused by the side vents on the nipple. So, after outfitting an 1851 Navy with a set of Slix Shots, I equipped it with a Wolff reduced power main spring to put the theory to the test.

Good info. Have you used vented nipples on other
revolvers of larger calibers, with similar results ?
I shoot .44s with about 24 grains and CCI #11 caps that are
always, what I thought, being blown off. You use #10s in most if not all your videos that stay on the nipples.
Will #11 stay put with vented nipples ?

G'day,
I am also interested in this as we can only get Remington No 11s here in Perth at the moment. I shoot 28 grs off Goex fffg in the dragoon and about 20 grs of the same in the London Navy.

cheers

I have Slix nipples on about a dozen guns...44s and .36s. They are sized for Remington #10 caps. CCI caps are sized completely different from Remington caps. CCI #10 are much too small and CCI #11 are oversized

Called Track of the Wolf , and was told by the tech
that all Italian guns nipples are different size and they (ToTW)make nipples specifically for Italian guns shooting with #11 caps
he mentioned trying #10 first.
Seems odd to me that Italians can't make more specific replicas. :td:

Gents,
have just ordered a set of slix
for the London Uberti Colt, so will be ver interested to see how they go for me.

Cheers

Nice video. Thanks.

In fact I have enjoyed all your videos.

I am curious as the effect of side vent nipples would have on the possibility of chain firing.
It seems tempting fate to direct hot gas sideways across the end of the cylinder towards another live cap.
Do the threads allow for the vent to be indexed in a certain direction?

The small vent will end up where it ends up. It is a function of the threads and how tight they are.

IMO most of the fire and flame gets deflected by the sides of the pocket that the nipple screws into.

The idea behind these pockets by the way was Patented by Colt. It serves as a barrier to the flames to keep them away from the neighboring nipples and caps.

Colt's first Paterson prototype didn't have these pockets and to make matters worse, he had enclosed the entire area with a tubular shield.

The chain firing that occurred caused him to redesign the area to get rid of the outer shield and to put the nipples down into the machined pockets.
All of his pistols used these in one form or another.

Got my slix nipples today, and gee, thread section looks just a size to small, the nipples were advertised for a Uberti, and said to fit most, guess must have one it doesn't. Have been back onto the retailer and hopefully these nipples are available in other thread sizes.
I should have checked the thread size before ordering so my fault. Should be able to pass them on to someone else with the right sized threads in their cylinder .

Good morning Mr. Beliveau. I have looked at most of your videos and find them interesting and helpful. I do have a question on the slix shot nipples. How effective are they on guns that do not have the hammer notch filed in? I prefer to load six chambers and use the safety pins. It is a little unclear to me as to whether or not the slix shot nipples prevent the “cap sucking” that regular nipples are prone to. Any help you can give would be helpful. I need to replace the nipples an a Uberti Walker if they fit.

Thank you very much. IONBuckaroo

Gents,
got my slix cones the other day, unfortunatley my cap and balls are all to old, so they dont fit. Just wondering if I might cross drill some ordinary iron ones and see how that goes. Has anyone tried this?

Cheers

With several of my Colt open top revolvers made by both Uberti and Pietta all are equipped with Slix Shot nipples and a lighter main spring, not like the one shown, but one with a wasp waist-ed profile. I don't remember the maker.
There has been a total of about a thousand rounds fired in different .44 caliber revolvers using the same process as Mike and there have been exactly NO chain fires and cap jams are almost non existent with Remington #10 caps. With CCI#11 and RWS 1075 cap jams were common so I use Remington #10 caps and GOEX FFFg powder exclusively.
