Looking to buy some glass vials to use for my pre measured powder charge, anyone know what size milliliter bottle would hold 80 grain 2f? Thanks
The volume capacity of a 45-70 case is 0.368 cubic inches (by one source) which converts to 6.03 ml. So a 6 or 7 ml vial gets you in the ballpark for 80 grains.Looking to buy some glass vials to use for my pre measured powder charge, anyone know what size milliliter bottle would hold 80 grain 2f? 'Bobs yer Uncle & Fanny's yer aunt .' Ive used the film pottles but not sure if there so common nowadays with the digitals only used in big ML competition's by me at leastI would suggest not buying glass. I bought a quantity of small plastic vials or "bottles" many years ago (I think it was the late 70s!) that are excellent for powder charges. I think they were designed for pills or medications, so you might check a local drug store. Mine are about 3 inches long, a half inch in diameter and they have red screw caps. They also have gradations on the side which make them handy for predicting where you can fill to get 50 grains, 80 grains, 100 grains, etc. They are not period or historically correct, of course, but they are excellent for trips to the range where you don't want to be fooling with powder horns or large quantities of black powder. I've used them for hunting for many years. Put 4 or five loads and a small loading block in your pocket, and....as the Brits say....Bob's your uncle!
I’ve had my glass vials now for almost 40 years, yeah a couple have broken. In the scheme of things I have lost more capsThese work for larger charges and the case that they come in is sturdy. I put 2 powder and 2 shot charges in my pack when
Turkey hunting. I take the whole thing when duck hunting so everything is ready to go. When the birds are flying, you can't reload fast enough.
These are plastic and affordable. Amazon I think
ELK muzzleloader charge tubes
If only they had come up with a way to hold premeasured powder charges back in the day!
Paper cartridges are all I use for fast reloads while hunting. They’re great.

I collect the plain white paper the local supermarket wrap fresh Fish and Meat in (plastic bag inside), also brown paper bags and the A4 ream printer paper. Add Glue stick for the cartridge tube and its sealed up enough to not be a problem. And if you buy plain newsprint used for wrapping glass and china when packing boxes for moving, you may discard the paper in the field as it's highly biodegradable . Brown paper from paper bags is as well.
Plus it's super cheap.
