Pictured in this post is a gray squirrel. Throughout most of their range they will have two litters per year, with 2-5 young per litter. Severe food shortage can result in smaller litters or even suspension of breeding. My source for this statement is Leonard Lee Rue III in his work Sportsman's Guide To Game Animals.
That's a great source. I have several of his books. Great photographer also.
 
I dressed out a fox squirrel many years ago in September that had a womb full of babies. It was then I learned about their ability to have multiple litters a year.
Those are nice rifles. I have one in 50 that has taken a few deer with a prb.
