I did a quick search and didn't find anything, so forgive me if I'm :dead:

I was just wondering: are all smoking hawks simply glorified pipes, or are/were there some that are functional?

Maybe you should try a search on pipe hawk. They were functional as both weapons and pipes during the day.

There are some good usable pipe hawks out there. I bought one as a kit in a good high carbon steel from http://www.redaviscompany.com/edgedweapons.html

It turned out very well, but I ended up making it too fancy and nice that I don't want to use it as a camp axe though.

If you want something strong ,but not a functioning pipe then Cold Steel just came out with a pipe tomahawk. I own a Cold Steel Trail hawk and Rifleman's hawk and like them both. I did some customizing to them of course to make them look better.

Thanks for that link to your thread. The links there were interesting. That smoking hawk on the tripod page was a beaut!

Now that I know they were functional, I think I will go for one, as I like to smoke a pipe on occasion and I think I'd like it better than my buddy's peace pipe! (Hi, John!)

This is one of those topics that is just kinda taken for granted as HC, but like you, I had never come across any documentation of it and did not know if it was purely ceremonial or if it was functional, too.

Thanks for the R. E. Davis link. There's some purdy hawks in thar! Which head did you go with?

I got the English pattern in the 4140 steel. I had to drill a small hole to finish the pipe and I filed in some grooves on the head and heat treated it. I also did some pewter casting for the mouth piece on the end and inlayed a couple silver diamond shapes in the handle. I have smoked it a couple times and it works good. Good luck on yours.

Have you ever noticed how a good plumber will drill a hole through a floor joist to run a pipe? Visualize a floor joist. In order for it to break the top must be compressed and the bottom shear apart. So the dead center of the joist is neutral and that's where the hole is drilled for the pipe. A hole on top or on the bottom will weaken the joist.
It seems that the hole through the center of a pipe hawk is sort of the same thing, so.... a pipe hawk ought to be just as usable as any other hawk. So use it as a hawk. IMHO that metal bowl makes a really bad smoke.
The question isn't if a pipe hawk was used as a hawk, it is if it was used as a pipe.
