A friend has a smooth rifle that looks like it should be copied after something around 1790. It has a 43" octagon barrel and is 20 gauge. I would like to make one just like it but I can't find any documentation on a rifle such as this. I even tried to find a smooth bore barrel in 20 guage with straight octagon barrel and no one seems to make one. Any suggestions? I need pictures, documentation maybe and place to buy a barrel. I've looked in several of the Schumway books without any luck.

Regards

Shumway's books are filled full of smooth rifles of all calibers.. You'll be wanting a swamped barrel, not straight.

As far as buying a barrel is concerned, you may do well to call around to several suppliers and maybe somebody has a smooth bored swamped octagon barrel in stock. Otherwise it would be a custom item and might take a while to get. It would be easier if you would be happy with an octagon to round barrel, which would be available in stock in 20 ga at several places. There are plenty of those also built up rifle style in Shumway's Rifles of Colonial America. The Bucks County guns were often smoothbored, many fine ones were made around 1790 or a little later, and one nice one pictured in volume 1 of the Rifles of Colonial America has a round barrel.

I went back to Shumway and found several examples just like was suggested. I'll call around about the swamped smooth barrel and see what happens. Thanks for the replys.

Chambers kit has a octogon to round smooth in 20 gauge, but not all octo. Call the boys at TOW. They have many listed on their websight.

I have a Getz swamped oct smooth .62 on a Chambers Virginia, I got it second hand so I do not know if it was a special order or a stock item from Getz.

Tip Curtis (Tip Curtis' Frontier Shop..(615)654-4445) always has swamped smoothbore Colerain barrels. I'm using one on a gun I'm doing right now. .54 smoothbore.
